A man charged in connection with a deadly 2023 shooting in Barren County has pleaded guilty.
James Edward Campbell, 49, of Edmonton, entered a plea Monday in Barren Circuit Court to a count of second-degree manslaughter and two counts of first-degree wanton endangerment.
Campbell faced criminal charges stemming from the death of Roger L. Noland, of Scottsville, who was shot Feb. 10, 2023, during a verbal dispute in Glasgow.
By pleading guilty, Campbell avoided a jury trial on a more serious charge of murder, for which a jury was to have been seated last week.
A plea agreement in the case recommends a 10-year sentence for Campbell, with the Barren County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office opposing probation or shock probation, court records show.
Noland’s death was investigated by the Glasgow Police Department, which was called to the 1400 block of North Race Street on Feb. 10, 2023, on a report of a male gunshot victim.
Police came to a scene where an adult woman and juvenile were present along with Campbell and Noland, who was taken to T.J. Samson Community Hospital and pronounced dead there.
Campbell was detained by police and agreed to an interview.
“During the interview, (Campbell) stated that earlier in the day, he and (Noland) had engaged in a disagreement that continued going back and forth via messages by phone,” GPD Captain Justin Kirkpatrick wrote in an arrest citation.
Noland and a woman traveled to North Race Street and met with Campbell, leading to the verbal argument that resulted in the shooting, according to court records.
Campbell, who has been under home incarceration while the case is pending, is due back in court on April 27 for sentencing.
