Western Kentucky’s women’s tennis team lost to Ball State 6-1 on Thursday at the Warren County Tennis Facility at Michael O. Buchanon Park.

The Lady Toppers (8-7) picked up a singles win from senior Elizabeth Sobieski in the loss to the Cardinals (7-3).

Sobieski improved to 2-2 in singles play this season with her win over Ball State. All of her matches this season have come at the No. 6 position. Sobieski’s win was her sixth singles win in her Lady Topper career.

“I guess the key for me was still believing in myself, even in the tough moments of the match,” Sobieski said. “It was 4-all, deuce and I got the point. I wasn’t there shaking and being nervous, so I think the biggest thing of why I was able to pull it out today was just the confidence and belief in myself.”

The Lady Toppers are now 3-2 in their current six-match homestand, with wins over Butler, Belmont and Tennessee State, and losses to SEMO and Ball State.

“I thought we played really well. We had a good performance today against, honestly, one of the toughest teams we’ve played this year,” WKU coach Greg Davis said. “Ball State’s got a real good shot of winning the MAC, and that’s a very difficult conference. I thought we competed well. We had four matches that went three sets and in doubles we were ahead in all three doubles matches at some point today. Good performance. I think it really prepares us well for next week’s first conference match against Sam Houston here a week from today.”

The Lady Toppers will wrap up their six-match homestand against Sam Houston on March 12, at 1 p.m.
