Trojanettes race past Logan for regional win

Barren County entered the Region 4 Girls’ Basketball Tournament as the presumptive favorite, a well-balanced team that has combined a harassing defense with a lethal scoring offense to beat nearly all comers this season.
The Trojanettes did little to dispel that notion Sunday at E.A. Diddle Arena, bursting out to a quick start and never letting up to beat Logan County 71-44 and advance to Friday’s regional semifinals. In less than five minutes, Barren County (30-2) had already built a 14-2 lead after back-to-back 3-pointers by Shelby Byrd and Addyson McFall capped the surge.
Logan County (17-16) responded to cut the deficit to single digits when Brenley Adler sank a 3 and then made a pair of free throws to pull her team back to within nine at 17-8 late in the first quarter.
Leading by 12 heading into the second period, the Trojanettes put the game away with a 9-0 run midway through the quarter. Ann Ashley Atkinson started it with a made free throw, Byrd scored on a drive and drew a foul before completing the and-one opportunity, then McFall buried another 3-pointer to put her team up 34-15 with 3:36 left in the first half.
By halftime, Barren led 40-19.
The Lady Cougars never got closer than 19 in the second half as the District 15 runner-up saw its season end.
“They’re the best,” Logan County coach Dedra Adler said of Barren County. “We knew that coming in here. We’re not stupid, right? Like, we can see the same thing everybody else can see. And I think what makes them so good is that they have multiple kids that can step up and step into big roles. I think at halftime they had hit seven 3s. They just shoot the ball so dang well that they’re hard to defend.
“Now, what we talked about at halftime … that kills any team, right, when a team shoots it that well. But I think what really killed us early in the first half was the points that they had off of turnovers and it was turnovers that I didn’t feel like were forced turnovers. It was us making some careless turnovers.”
Barren County shot a stellar 53.1% (26-of-49) from the field, including a 10-of-23 (43.5%) effort from 3-point range. The Trojanettes, the District 15 champions, forced 17 turnovers and enjoyed a 27-8 advantage in points off turnovers.
“Obviously you want to see the ball go through the net and we did that early, and I think that just kind of relaxes you a little bit,” Barren County coach Piper Lindsey said. “I thought we played extremely well. We shared the ball, but reason that was is just good players, good teammates that want to be there for each other.”
Byrd led the Trojanettes with 15 points and tallied four assists. McFall continued her late-season scoring surge with 14 points as the senior connected on four 3-pointers in the win. Atkinson had 12 points, five rebounds and two blocks, freshman Layla Harris also scored 12 points and sophomore Mahalia Burton turned in an all-around solid line with five points, a game-high seven assists, five rebounds and three steals.
Lindsey said this year’s squad is “one of the most well-rounded groups that we’ve ever had.”
“I think this is probably one of the best teams that we’ve had, as far as our guard play,” Lindsey said. “I mean it’s really, really good. It’s not just one player that’s like that – we’ve got several.”
Atkinson said the close personal bonds the team has formed has been showing up on court this season.
“We have really good chemistry both on and off the court and I think that helps a lot,” Atkinson said. “We all trust each other to do well, so we’re all willing to make that extra pass and get it to our teammates.”
Brenley Adler finished with a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Lady Cougars, with Reese Wetton chipping in with 11 points. Logan County featured no seniors and just two juniors on this year’s squad, and hopes this experience will pay off with a more successful return trip next season.
“We are a young team,” Logan County junior Reese Wetton said. “We never use that as an excuse, but just getting to experience it again and for our younger ones just getting to experience Diddle and just the arena and everything, I think it helped to prepare us better for next year.”
Barren County advances to Friday’s regional semifinals to face District 16 runner-up Monroe County at 6:30 p.m. at Diddle.
