After winning the District 14 tournament the Bowling Green girls’ basketball will have little time to celebrate, facing District 16 runner-up Monroe County in the first game of the Region 4 Tournament which begins Sunday at 3 p.m. at E.A. Diddle Arena.
It will be the first meeting between the two schools since the 2017 Region 4 tournament, when Monroe County eliminated the Lady Purples. Monroe County (20-9) enters as winners of seven of the last nine, the only two losses to district rival Cumberland County.
The Lady Falcons have tournament experience, advancing to the All ‘A’ State Tournament earlier this season.
“A huge challenge,” Bowling Green coach Calvin Head said. “They are probably the hottest team in the region. I think they were a point away from Cumberland County in the district championship. (Head coach Clifton Hamilton) has done an outstanding job with them, just looking at them from a distance. We’ve got our hands full and we’ve got a short turnaround, playing the first game on Sunday. All the odds are kind of against us, but I like where we are at. We will prepare and see what happens.”
Bowling Green (17-13) enters off the eight straight district titles. The Lady Purples are 9-4 in the last 13 games and 12-2 overall against region opponents.
“We are trending in the right direction,” Head said. “I like where we are at. We will spend the rest of the morning trying to prepare and come up with a game plan. We will practice today and practice tomorrow and see what happens Sunday.”
Sunday’s second game will see District 15 champion Barren County (29-2) facing District 13 runner-up Logan County (17-15) at 4:30 p.m. The Trojanettes have won 17 straight, including a 63-58 win over Allen County-Scottsville in the District 15 title game. This will be the first meeting between the two schools since 2024. Barren County has won nine straight in the series, with Logan County’s last win over the Trojanettes in 2016.
The first round wraps up Monday, beginning with District 14 runner-up Greenwood (15-16) facing District 13 champion Franklin-Simpson (21-7) in a regular-season rematch at 6:30 p.m.. The Lady Cats defeated the Lady Gators 74-47 at Greenwood on Jan. 20.
“Franklin-Simpson is really good,” Greenwood coach Terrance Williams said. “I’m super excited to play them again though. I feel like we are a different team than we were at that point. They are as well, but I honestly think it is one of the best draws we could have got as far as the side. Every team that is in this region that is still playing is just crazy good. You can’t ask for anything but an opportunity and that’s what we’ve got, so we are blessed to be (playing).”
The final game on Monday will also be a regular-season rematch, with District 16 champion Cumberland County (21-8) facing District 15 runner-up Allen County-Scottsville (21-8) at 8 p.m. The Lady Panthers defeated ACS 66-46 on Feb. 3.
The semifinals are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Friday, with the championship game scheduled for 7 p.m. on March 7.
