Western Kentucky’s women’s tennis team opened a six-match homestand with a 6-1 win over Butler on Sunday at the Warren County Tennis Facility at Michael O. Buchanon Park.
The Lady Toppers (6-5) claimed the doubles point with wins from Barbara Olvera and Virginia Madueño at the No. 2 position and from Isabelle Einess and Ariadna Fernandez at the No. 3 position to start the match, then picked up singles wins from Einess, Emily Schut, Madueño, Olvera and Fernandez to take down the Bulldogs (3-10).
“Good win over a very good Big East team in Butler,” WKU coach Greg Davis said in a news release. “It was what we expected. They were a very difficult team up top. Doubles was a challenge and we pulled through it at two and three. Really did a good job finishing the match at one with Isabelle and Emily at three. I’m proud of the team. Had a lot of tough matches and came out on top.”
WKU has won the doubles point in five of its 11 matches. The Lady Toppers have won all five matches in which they have won the doubles point.
Olvera and Madueño improved to 6-3 together in doubles this season and 4-2 from the No. 2 position.
“It was a really hard match for everyone,” Olvera said. “I think supporting each other and being loud was a key.”
Einess and Fernandez improved to 1-1 together in doubles this season, with both matches played at the No. 3 position.
WKU is now 40-25 overall in singles matches this season.
Einess improved to 6-4 in singles matches, with all matches played at the No. 1 position.
Schut moved to 7-4 in singles this season, with a 4-3 record at the No. 3 position. She has won four consecutive matches and now has 22 singles wins in her Lady Topper tennis career.
Madueño improved to 9-1 in singles this season with her eighth straight win. Madueño has posted a 5-0 record from the No. 4 position.
Olvera is now 5-5 this spring in singles matches.
Fernandez improved to 6-4 in singles matches, including 5-3 at the No. 6 position.
The Lady Toppers will play SEMO in the second match of a six-match homestand on Friday. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
“It was very important because we came off a pretty solid weekend last weekend, and just being able to get a win at home with a couple of matches here coming up – just having the momentum going into those matches is very important,” Einess said.
