Skeletal remains that were recently discovered in a cave in Simpson County are part of a Native American burial site, the Simpson County Sheriff’s Office announced Friday.
SCSO said that the cave where the remains were found has a very small entrance and can only be accessed with proper climbing equipment.
After the discovery was reported, SCSO worked with the Kentucky State Medical Examiner’s Office, the University of Kentucky and the Kentucky Heritage Council, and authorities determined after an examination that the remains were part of a Native American burial site and should remain undisturbed.
“The site is protected by law,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “Out of respect for its cultural and historical significance, the exact location will not be disclosed.”
