Western Kentucky took Game 3 of its season-opening baseball series with BYU on Saturday afternoon at Nick Denes Field, earning a 4-2 victory and 2-1 lead in the four-game series.

A go-ahead two-RBI single from Camden Ross with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning plated Lane Arroyos and Daniel Stewart, pushing the Hilltoppers in front 4-2.

After BYU struck first on a solo home run in the top of the first inning, WKU answered immediately as Arroyos launched a solo homer down the right-field line to tie the contest at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame.

WKU (2-1) gained the lead in the bottom of the fourth as Reid Howard advanced to second on a wild pitch and Ross scored on another wild pitch, giving the Hilltoppers a 2-1 advantage.

BYU evened the score at 2-2 in the fifth inning on an RBI single that brought a runner home.

The Tops regained the lead in the bottom of the eighth off a two-run single by Ross to drive home Stewart and Arroyos.

Left-hander Zach Lyles secured the win in relief, recording three strikeouts in two scoreless innings.

The Hilltopper offense tallied four runs on six hits and four walks. Arroyos paced the WKU offense with his second home run on the season and scored twice. Ross finished with a two-RBI day, driving in the go-ahead runs and securing the lead for WKU late. Stewart scored a run and chipped in a hit in the eighth.

Dominic Monaco worked three innings, allowing just one run and striking out two batters. Trey Reinburg added 2 2/3 relief innings with three strikeouts. Zach Serup closed out the sixth frame, working a scoreless inning.

WKU wraps its series with the Cougars on Monday at Nick Denes Field. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
