Kunkel, Basic highlight WKU’s first day at Invite

Western Kentucky’s track and field teams wrapped up the opening day of competition at the Tyson invitational on Friday in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Action Friday for the Hilltoppers got underway with Van Thrasher finishing 34th in the men’s 60-meter hurdles with a mark of 8.24 seconds.
In the women’s 3,000 meters, Kinley Kunkel logged a new personal best mark of 9:39 which is seven seconds faster than her previous PR set at the Vanderbilt Invitational. Her mark also stands at No. 4 in WKU indoor history.
In the men’s 60-meter prelims, Kameron Horton claimed a time of 7.02, good for 46th place. In the men’s long jump, Sterling Weldon managed a jump of 7.26 meters.
The final two events for the Hilltoppers on Friday were the women’s weight throw and the men’s 800. In the weight throw, Ajla Basic claimed a 17th-place finish with a PR of 19.71 meters. That beat her previous best of 19.40 meters. Basic’s toss stands at No. 2 in WKU indoor history, breaking the previous record of 19.69 meters set back in 2017 by Jenessa Jackson.
In the men’s 800, Wade Balcom finished up in 28th with a season-best finish of 1:51.
