Lady Toppers drop 50-38 road decision to Bearkats

Western Kentucky’s women’s basketball team (5-11, 1-4 CUSA) fell 50-38 to Sam Houston (11-4, 4-0 CUSA) on Thursday evening at the Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum in Huntsville, Texas.
Sam Houston (11-4 overall, 4-0 Conference USA) scored first with a 3-pointer. Zsofia Telegdy was the first to score for WKU (5-11, 1-4 CUSA). Tia Shelling put WKU ahead with a layup in transition following a steal from Salma Khedr. The Bearkats responded with a 3 to go back ahead, but Telegdy connected on a 3 on the next possession to put WKU back on top, 7-6.
Sam Houston scored five straight after that to go ahead. WKU scored the final basket of the quarter at the 3:39 to make the score 11-9. Both teams went on scoring droughts in the final minutes of the frame.
Trinity Rowe scored the first points of the second quarter on a 3-pointer to put WKU ahead, 12-11. The Bearkats responded with a 9-0 run that expanded to a 13-2 run. Rowe made her second 3 with 1:09 left in the half to cut the lead down to seven. Sam Houston scored with 12 seconds left to take a 26-17 lead into halftime.
Sam Houston expanded the lead out to 12 to start the third quarter. The two teams went back and forth, but a 3-pointer from Rowe at the 3:50 mark cut the lead down to eight. From there, the Bearkats outscored WKU 9-3 to take a 42-28 lead into the fourth quarter.
Back-to-back layups from Shelling to start the fourth quarter cut the lead down to 10, but that was as close as it would get the rest of the game.
Shelling had a career high eight steals in the game.
Rowe and Telegdy were the leading scorers for WKU with 11 points each. It was the eighth double-digit game of the season for Telegdy and the fourth for Rowe.
Khedr had a career-high seven rebounds.
