Lights out: Trojanettes prevail over ACS in district clash

GLASGOW – Barren County’s girls’ basketball team didn’t actually shoot the lights out Thursday night against visiting Allen County-Scottsville, though for a stretch the Trojanettes seemed capable of the feat.
No, the hour-long power outage that plunged Barren County’s gymnasium into semi-darkness – aside from emergency floodlights and a slew of cellphone flashlights – can be pinned on heavy thunderstorm that rolled through the area during Thursday’s District 15 game.
By the time the lights came back on with the Trojanettes already up 20 points early in the fourth quarter, there wasn’t much the Lady Patriots could do to stave off a 62-41 loss in a battle of arguably two of Region 4’s top teams this season.
Barren County (7-0 overall, 1-0 District 15) had just pushed its lead to 52-32 on Hannah Bragg’s layup on a fast break before the building went dark with 6:57 left in the game. The Trojanettes and Lady Patriots hung out courtside on the bench for awhile, then retreated to their equally dark locker rooms to pass the time.
“We actually did a bunch of team bonding,” Barren County junior Shelby Byrd said. “We played Mafia – we love playing that before games. So we were like, we don’t know how much longer until the electricity can come back on, so we just spent as much time as possible playing the game.”
Garry DeWitt, who has been either head coach or an assistant at ACS for 18 seasons, said Thursday’s power outage delay was a first for him.
“I never had – I mean, I’ve had them blink on me but I’ve never had that,” DeWitt said.
The Trojanettes made the most of the perfect visibility in the first half. Leading 7-4 midway through the first quarter, Barren started to heat up from the field and outscored ACS 11-6 the rest of the period with Adalynn Slagle knocking down a pair of 3-pointers and Addyson McFall adding another.
McFall kept up her hot shooting in the second quarter, burying two more 3s and a pull-up jumper during an 11-3 run the pushed the lead to 34-19 with 4:10 left in the first half.
“I feel like everybody knows how great of a player Shelby (Byrd) is, but we’ve got some other kids around her like McFall and Addy Slagle – I think Mahalia Burton also gave us a little lift too. I just think we share the ball really well and we just try to find that extra pass so that we can get a great shot maybe instead of a good shot.”
Byrd had a challenging night as the primary defender against the Lady Patriots’ high-scoring Avery Morris. The junior guard, who came in averaging 28.7 points per game, was held to 13 by the Trojanettes.
“I thought she did an excellent job guarding her,” Lindsey said of Byrd. “She kind of bought into exactly what we needed to do. And I’m not taking anything away from Shelby, but I thought everybody else did a great job as far as where we were supposed to be in the help.”
Byrd finished with a game-high 18 points, with Slagle, Burton and McFall each adding 11 points in the win.
Leading 38-22 at halftime, Barren never let its lead dip below 16 points the rest of the way.
“They played really well in the first half and they shot the ball extremely well,” DeWitt said. “They had a couple kids step up that I didn’t think were going to hit 3s and they did. We’ve just got to go back to the drawing board. It’s not big deal. We got beat by Barren at Barren – that’s happened a lot of times over the years. I thought we were better than that, though. I really thought we were better than that. I was a little disappointed that we let them shoot those shots almost uncontested – we can’t have that. We can’t do that again.”
Debora Patrick tallied a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead Allen County-Scottsville (5-2, 0-1), which returns to action Dec. 28 at home in the Lady Invitational of the South.
Barren County is slated to face Greenbrier (Tennessee) on Saturday in the KY vs. TN Classic at Greenwood High School.

Weston Shelton scored only eight points, but tallied perhaps the biggest basket of his varsity career when connected on the go-ahead 3-pointer with four seconds left to boost Barren County to a 56-55 win against visiting Allen County-Scottsville on Thursday.
Shelton, a sophomore guard who scored a combined 40 points against Edmonson County and South Warren the two previous games, ended up with the ball in his hands in the final seconds with the Trojans down two.
“The post had been working all game so we were going to go with that, but it was there,” Shelton said. “The post wasn’t there so we just kicked it out and I just shot it.”
Barren County (5-2, 1-0) pushed out to a 17-10 lead by the end of the first quarter, but the visiting Patriots reeled them in. Despite losing starter Jonah Hamby to an injury in the first minute and missing fellow starter Ay’Den Grainger – who had to sit out the second of two games for getting ejected in a game against Henderson County – ACS (3-4, 0-1) chipped away at the Trojans’ lead. Kyler Pedigo, who hit a pair of 3s earlier in the second quarter, sank a pair of free throws to put the Patriots up 27-26 at the break.
Pedigo, who finished with a game-high 18 points along with seven rebounds and six assists, gave ACS the lead again at 43-41 the end of the third period by draining a buzzer-beating 3.
The Patriots led by four before a six-point swing by the Trojans – five coming from Cameron Pippen – gave Barren a 51-50 advantage with 1:53 to go.
Two lead changes later, Pedigo pushed ACS ahead 55-53 by hitting one of two free throws with 23 seconds left. The Trojans answered on their ensuing possession with Shelton’s go-ahead 3.
With two seconds left on the clock, the Patriots needed to go the length of the floor but didn’t make it – a turnover off an errant pass locked up the win for Barren.
“It’s a very important, much-needed district win,” Barren County coach Warren Cunningham said. “At home especially, you don’t want to give those up. It wasn’t the cleanest or probably most well-played game, but both teams played really hard and wanted really badly to get a win. We were fortunate and made a big shot there at the end.”
Braden Spears had 11 points and Tyler Turner added 10 points for ACS, which travels to Caldwell County on Tuesday.
Pippen led the Trojans with 11 points, and Gavin Nunn added a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds.
Barren County will face Springfield (Tennessee) in the H&H Holiday Hoopfest on Dec. 26 at Logan County.
