Mike Murphy, a local builder who transformed the landscape of Bowling Green, died last Thursday at 72.
“His influence can be felt in classrooms, boardrooms, and living rooms throughout the community,” his obituary states. “He changed skylines, strengthened institutions, and helped shape the heartbeat of the town he loved.”
Murphy was born in 1953 and was a 1976 graduate of Western Kentucky University, where he earned a degree in civil engineering.
He is perhaps best known for the Murphy Construction Group, which oversees Scott & Murphy, Scott, Murphy & Daniel and Hartz Contracting.
Along with leading Murphy Construction, he chaired the Kentucky Association of Highway Contractors in 2015 and was chairman of the board for the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce in 2001.
He also served the St. Joseph Catholic School Board for nearly 20 years and worked with the Bowling Green Area Economic Development Authority.
Online tributes have poured in from local entities and officials. The chamber described Murphy as “an unwavering pillar of our community.”
“His influence in construction, economic development, and community leadership will resonate for generations,” the chamber stated. “Many of us were fortunate to work beside him, learn from his wisdom, and count him as a true friend. His presence will be deeply missed.”
Warren County Judge-Executive Doug Gorman described Murphy as his “mentor and friend” in a Dec. 12 Facebook post.
“Murf was the most loyal, caring, intentional person you could know,” Gorman stated. ” … The impact you’ve made on my life and my family’s lives for over 40 years is immeasurable.”
Visitation for Murphy will be held Friday, Dec. 19 at St. Joseph Catholic Church from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., followed by a prayer service.
A mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday, Dec. 20 at 10 a.m. at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Visitation will happen that morning at Holy Spirit from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.
