GLASGOW – South Warren turned up the pressure and forced Monroe County into six turnovers in the final quarter of Saturday’s boys’ basketball matchup in the Don Franklin Auto Barren Hoops Classic at Barren County High School.

The Falcons managed to force just one turnover in that same span, but it was a big one – the Spartans lost the ball with just less than seven seconds left and trailing by three points. That forced South to foul, and Monroe County’s Brison Nuckols iced the game by hitting a pair of free throws with four seconds to go to boost the Falcons to a 58-53 win.

“We had a set drawn up that we were going to try – I thought we had a clear look that we were going to get,” South Warren coach Carlos Quarles said. “It just wasn’t good execution to get that shot off. We had a wide-open shot, but that’s just the way it happens sometimes. We’ll get back after it Tuesday night.”

South Warren (3-1) trailed by as many as 10 points in the third quarter before clawing back into the game. The Spartans did it by pressing Monroe County (4-1) for much of the second half, coming up with nine turnovers while losing only three in the final two quarters.

Back-to-back baskets by Caden McIntyre and Jaxen Decker got South within 53-49 with 4:03 to play, but Monroe’s Branson Williams got loose inside for a basket and then hit a free throw for three straight points.

The Spartans got two points back when Decker hit a pull-up jumper in the paint, then after another forced turnover Owen Shively cut through the lane to hit a one-handed shot that got South to within 56-53 with 37 seconds to play.

South then forced another turnover, but lost possession with its own turnover in the final seconds.

Monroe County finished the first half strong, outscoring the Spartans 13-3 over the final 3:29 to build a 35-28 lead at the break.

Nuckols led the Falcons with a game-high 18 points. Williams added 13 in the win.

Decker just missed a double-double for the Spartans with 11 points and nine rebounds. McIntyre tallied 10 points, and Brandon Perkins and Clay Willis scored nine points each.

“The emphasis is to get paint points and paint touches and we settled for too many jump shots on key possessions where I thought we got them in trouble a little bit and kind of bailed them out by shooting jump shots,” Quarles said. “We weren’t making them today, so it wasn’t to our benefit. We’ve got to make a few more shots, we’ve got to make our layups – I think we missed maybe 10 layups and every time we’d miss a layup they’d got down and hit a 3 .. five-points swings that were keeping us from trying to get control of the game.”

South Warren is back in action Tuesday at home against Barren County.

Clinton County 71, Greenwood 45

Clinton County put together a decisive rally spanning the second and third quarters to pull away from Greenwood for a 71-45 victory on Saturday at Barren County.

Holding a 26-2-0 lead with 3:53 left in the second quarter, the Bulldogs outscored the Gators 18-3 during a stretch that extended into the third. William Beaty (game-high 27 points) capped that surge with back-to-back 3-pointers as Clinton County (3-2) claimed an impressive win in Region 4 competition.

Greenwood (3-2) fell behind 10-0 to start the game, but surged back with 10-4 run to get within 14-11 after Chaze Huff’s made free throw late in the first quarter.

“We fought back after digging ourselves in a hole early and made it a one- or two-possession game,” Greenwood coach Will McCoy said. “Then we let them go on a (9-1) run to go into the half. It took quite a bit of wind out of our sails. They’re a team that when you get down double digits to Clinton County with that methodical style that they like to play, it’s extremely tough to get back into the game. They’re disciplined, they know where to go with the ball and what to do with the ball.

“We tried to speed them up and on a few possessions were successful. We just gave them way too many easy baskets at the rim and dug ourselves too big of a hole there.”

Jaxson Mason scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Clinton County, with Drew Davis chipping in eight points. The Bulldogs outrebounded the Gators 29-18.

Isaiah Summers finished with 10 points and Brayden Kennedy had nine points for Greenwood, which is back in action Tuesday at home against North Hardin.
