A man accused of attempting to overpower Butler County deputy jailers in an effort to escape the facility has been indicted on several criminal counts.
A grand jury in Butler County indicted Charles Michael Clayton, 26, of Russellville, on charges of first-degree strangulation, first-degree attempted escape, two counts of third-degree assault, kidnapping, first-degree criminal mischief and disarming a peace officer.
According to court records, Clayton injured two deputies during the incident and three Butler County Jail inmates assisted in defusing the situation.
The Morgantown Police Department was called to the jail on April 13 after receiving a report of an inmate having assaulted multiple deputies.
An arrest citation documented a visible neck injury on Dep. James Chapman and a head injury on Dep. Cecil Orten.
Chapman informed police that he was leading Clayton back to a holding cell from the shower and that as he held the cell door open, Clayton grabbed him from behind and wrapped his arm around his threat, with Chapman reporting that “he felt a sharp point pressed against his throat.”
“James stated that (Clayton) kept saying multiple times that he was going to stab him,” an arrest citation said.
Chapman told police that Clayton led him to the rear exit door of the jail and told him to get his keys, and that Clayton still had his arm around Chapman’s throat at the back door, records show.
At that point, another inmate, Greg Hatcher, intervened, “going after” Clayton, which enabled Chapman to get away from Clayton’s grasp, the citation said.
Orten arrived and told Chapman to retrieve a stun gun from the jail’s control room, and when Chapman returned with the stun gun, he saw Clayton on the ground with Orten, and three inmates worked to restrain Clayton.
Chapman told police he gave the stun gun to Orten before leaving to get a second stun gun from the control room.
According to the citation, Orten reported that he and an inmate, Travis Hunt, pinned Clayton to the back door during a physical struggle.
Clayton was able to wrest the stun gun away from Orten and attempted to use it on the deputy, but Orten knocked the stun gun out of Clayton’s hand, an arrest citation said.
“(Orten) stated that (Clayton) had knocked him to the ground which resulted in the injury to the top of his head,” the citation said.
Orten and a group of inmates were able to get Clayton the ground, and deputies were able to restrain him with handcuffs and shackles.
The window on the rear exit door was broken during the incident, with Orten telling police that Clayton broke it with his elbow while his arm was wrapped around Chapman’s neck, according to court records.
Clayton was treated at an area hospital for an elbow injury before being booked into Logan County Detention Center.
He remains held under a $200,000 cash bond and is scheduled to be arraigned May 13 in Butler Circuit Court.
