Panthers use walk-off homer to claim extra-inning win against Tops

Western Kentucky dropped the Conference USA series finale to FIU 7-5 in extra innings on Sunday afternoon at FIU Baseball Stadium in Miami.

WKU dropped to 34-10 overall and 11-7 CUSA on the season, and 41-47 all-time against FIU (26-18, 9-8 CUSA).

Two runs scored for WKU in the first inning. Kyle Hayes drove one in before a FIU error tacked on another.

Ryan Wideman used an RBI single to extend the Hilltopper lead to 3-0 in the third.

Two runs scored for FIU in the fourth with a sacrifice fly and a solo home run.

A sacrifice fly from WKU’s Ethan Lizama put the score at 4-2 in the fifth.

An RBI groundout and a solo home run tied the game for the Panthers in the bottom of the frame.

Lizama launched a solo homer over the right-field wall to give WKU a 5-4 lead in the 10th.

A three-run walk-off homer won the game for FIU in the bottom of the 10th.

Dawson Hall got the starting nod on the mound for the Hilltoppers. The right-hander allowed four runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings of action.

Gavin Perry, Cal Higgins and Treyson Peters made appearances out of the bullpen. Perry tossed 1 1//3 shutout frames while allowing just one hit. Higgins struck out four while surrendering two runs in three innings. Peters conceded one run on one hit in a third of an inning.

The WKU scored five runs on six hits and eight walks with four RBIs.

Lizama led the way in a 2-for-4 effort with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Wideman was 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, an RBI and a run scored. The outfielder now has 35 stolen on the season, tying the second-most in a single-season in program history with Ryan Hepworth. Hepworth did it in the 1990 campaign.

WKU hosts in-state SEC foe Kentucky for a midweek contest on Tuesda at Nick Denes Field. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
