WKU athletes set 13 personal bests in Louisville

Western Kentucky’s track and field teams wrapped up Day 1 of action at the Jim Freeman/ Clark Wood Open on Friday in Louisville.

In total, WKU saw 13 new personal bests with seven coming from the men’s team. In addition to the PRs, the Hilltoppers managed to finish in the top 10 in their respective events on 10 occasions.

Action on the track opened up with a slew of personal bests in both the women’s and the men’s 800-meter races. In the women’s event, Addie Frisch set a new personal best, finishing in the top 20. Tatum Maschhoff also managed a new best mark in the event.

In the men’s 800, all four competitors for the Tops finished with a new personal-best mark. Wade Balcom and Trevor Hudnall both finished in the top 20, finishing in 14th and 16th respectively. Hollis Johnson cracked the top 25, claiming 24th place.

In the hurdles, Gianna Huerta and Henry Fisher both set new bests in the event. Fisher claimed a 16th-place finish in the men’s event, while Huerta took home 17th in the women’s race.

In the men’s 200, Zachariah Taylor led the way with a sixth-place finish. Brunel Desinor and Sterling Weldon both tied for 14th. Weldon also set a PR in the event. Madison Rabe set a PR in the women’s 200.

In the men’s pole vault, Caleb Joyce managed a season-best vault with a mark of 4.46 meters, good for second place in his pool.

In the women’s 5,000-meter race, Kinley Kunkel had a second-place finish with a time of 17:25, marking a season best for the sophomore. In the men’s 5,000, Tyler Pfefferkorn set a PR with a mark of 15:47.

The final event of the night, the men’s javelin throw, Devon Rogers managed a season-best mark with a throw of 55.53 meters, good for third place.

WKU will continue competition at the Jim Freeman and Clark Wood Open on Saturday.
