Western Kentucky’s softball team claimed a Conference USA series sweep with a 3-1 win against New Mexico State on Saturday at the WKU Softball Complex.
The Hilltoppers improved to 24-19 overall and 10-10 in CUSA, while NMSU fell to 22-22 overall and 9-12 in CUSA.
With WKU’s Morgan Sharpe reaching with a bunt single and advancing to second on the throw in the first inning, Kennedy Stinson extended her hit streak to seven games and her RBI streak to five with a single up the middle for WKU’s first run of the day.
NMSU changed pitchers between Faith Aragon and Desirae Spearman every home half of the inning, while Hilltoppers pitcher Erica Houge took over for Rylan Smith after two innings.
Both team’s pitching staff combined for a total of 14 strikeouts across the seven innings as the game quickly settled into a pitcher’s duel after the third.
With one out in the home half of the sixth, WKU”s Maci Masters homered over the left-field fence — a blast that made it to the third floor of the parking structure and struck a car in the process. The home run was the 14th of the season for Masters.
Up 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth, both Macy Gregor and Charlotte Herron singled to put Hilltoppers on second and third after Gregor stole third. With Gregor on third, Kaytlan Kemp took over on the base paths.
Leading the conference in sacrifice bunts, Randi Drinnon squared around to earn her ninth sacrifice bunt of the year on a squeeze bunt that rolled up the first-base line.
Her sacrifice bunt attempt turned into a fielder’s choice as the first baseman fielded the bunt and threw home to try and get Kemp out, but was unsuccessful as WKU added another run to the board.
Only giving up a single in the top of the seventh, Houge retired NMSU’s bats to earn her seventh win of the season and the Hilltoppers’ first sweep of the season.
WKU will take a road trip to Louisville on Tuesday to play Louisville for the second time this season. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT.
