A fire early Saturday reduced the main building at Park Mammoth Resort to rubble.

The building at Park City had most recently operated as part of Maple Retreat.

Edmonson County Sheriff James Vincent said that a motorist on Interstate 65 saw the flames while traveling and reported the fire.

By about 3:30 a.m., first responders from numerous fire departments converged on the site.

“It was an abandoned building and part of it had been torn down,” Vincent said. “There was no power there and nobody in it or around it, and we don’t know how it caught fire yet.”

Vincent said that firefighters traveling to the scene encountered an obstacle – the property owners had blocked off the entrance with two gates with large rocks placed in front of them.

“(Firefighters) had to remove the gates and winch the rocks away so they could get their trucks in there,” Vincent said.

Rocky Hill, Chalybeate, Brownsville, Wingfield, Kyrock, Lincolc, Park City, Cave City and Horse Cave fire departments all responded, along with the ECSO and Barren County EMS.

No injuries were reported.

Vincent said the state fire marshal’s office will be contacted to conduct the investigation into the cause of the fire.
