Western Kentucky senior Sofia Blanco was named the Conference USA Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday.
“Kudos to Sofia. We’re really happy for her being named Athlete of the Week. It’s a great honor,” WKU coach Greg Davis said in a news release. “This is the second time she’s won it this season. It’s very meaningful on Senior Week to celebrate the beginning of the week with this award.”
It marks the third CUSA weekly award Blanco has received this season and the fourth of her career. Blanco was also named the CUSA Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week, as well as the CUSA Women’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week with teammate Rachel Hermanova, on March 5. She was named the league’s Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week once during the 2024 season.
Blanco claimed her team-leading 14th singles win of the year during WKU’s match at Liberty on Saturday. The senior defeated Liberty’s Daniella O’Neill 6-4, 7-5 at the No. 2 position, marking the 54th singles win of her career and the 104th combined singles and doubles win of her career, which is a program record.
It is the fourth weekly award the Lady Toppers have won this season. In addition to Blanco’s Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week recognition and the Doubles Team of the Week with Hermanova, sophomores Emily Schut and Mia Miranda were named the CUSA Women’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week on Jan. 29. The four weekly awards are the most the program has received in a single season since joining CUSA, doubling the previous single-season record.
WKU has now claimed nine CUSA weekly awards under Davis. In addition to the CUSA weekly awards won this season, Cora-Lynn von Dungern was named CUSA Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week in 2020, Laura Bernardos claimed the award in 2021, Hermanova won it in 2023, and both Blanco and Sayda Hernandez were CUSA Women’s Tennis Athletes of the Week during the 2024 season.
The Lady Toppers are 14-9 heading into the last match of the regular season this week. WKU beat Campbellsville 7-0 on Wednesday and hosts Alabama A&M at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday for Senior Day. The Senior Day ceremony will begin at 1 p.m. at the Warren County Tennis Facility at Michael O. Buchanon Park.
