Some eight to nine local organizations on Tuesday picked up food and other non-perishable donations at House on the Hill Inc. that were collected at grocery stories last weekend in Warren County through United Way of Southern Kentucky’s food drive.
“It’s very important for our food pantries to be restocked every year,” UWSK Community Engagement Manager Erin Caudill said. “Some had to cut back their hours because they were missing out on food donations and being able to serve the community, so this will be a great start to hopefully set them up for the next few months for individuals to come by and receive food.”
UWSK organized the annual event throughout the region while keeping donations within the county they’re made. In the past 15 years, the annual initiative has collected more than a million goods, and last year, the initiative collected nearly 65,000 items, according to UWSK.
This year, a preliminary count indicated that people donated more than 60,000 items, according to UWSK.
“It continues to amaze us how the community continues to engage with the Feed the Need over the past 15 years, and how the program continues to grow,” UWSK Marketing and Communications Specialist Elizabeth Newbould said.
