Hilltoppers power past Lipscomb for 8-3 road win

Western Kentucky cruised to an 8-3 softball win over Lipscomb thanks to home runs from both Annie White and Randi Drinnon on Tuesday in Nashville.
The Hilltoppers (18-15) combined for a total of 11 hits, while the pitching staff struck out four batters and gave up six hits to the Bisons (18-17).
Annie White led off the top of the second inning with a triple down the left-field line, with Charlotte Herron finishing it off with a single to right field for the RBI.
Neither side scored for the next three innings until the top of the sixth.
Maci Masters led off with a single through the left side, while White followed up with a single of her own to the other side of the field.
With runners on first and second, Herron grabbed her second hit of the game with a double that also earned her second RBI of the day.
A deep fly ball to center field from Morgan Sharpe pushed another Hilltopper across for the third run of the game and Sharpe’s first RBI.
Drinnon’s first home run of the season went over the left-field wall for a two-RBI blast.
By the middle of the sixth inning, the Hilltoppers were up 5-0 on the Bisons.
In the home half of the inning, Lipscomb pulled together three runs to shorten WKU’s lead to two.
Both Masters and Kaytlan Kemp earned a spot on the base paths after both reached thanks to fielder’s choice. With runners on first and second, White registered her fourth home run of the season over the left-center wall for three RBIs.
Three Hilltopper pitchers saw action in the circle, Rylan Smith, Maddy Wood and Erica Houge combined for four strikeouts.
WKU will travel to Kennesaw, Georgia, for a three-game series against Conference USA rival Kennesaw State. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT at Bailey Park.
