Hilltoppers blank LA Tech 8-0

Western Kentucky exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for their fourth walk-off win of the season with an 8-0 victory against Louisiana Tech at the WKU Softball Complex.

WKU (16-14 overall, 3-6 Conference USA) got on scoreboard early thanks to Maci Masters’ ninth home run of the season — a solo shot to left field.

In the home half of the sixth, the Bulldogs (20-12 overall, 7-3 CUSA) gave up a handful of bases loaded walks before WKU’s Kendle White delivered a walk-off, bases-clearing double.

The Hilltoppers handed LA Tech its second shutout loss of the season as WKU collected eight runs on eight hits while

WKU starting pitcher Rylan Smith kept the Bulldogs’ offense at bay with five strikeouts and giving up only one hit.

On the second pitch of her at-bat, Masters got the scoring started for the Hilltoppers with a solo shot to left field. For the next five innings, however, neither side would score a single run.

The Bulldogs threatened with a runner in scoring position after Nicole Hammoude hit a double to right center, but Hammoude’s hit was the only one of the night for LA Tech.

All of the drama came in the home half of the sixth inning as Masters opened with a double down the left-field line.

Annie White then followed with a single up the middle while Charlotte Herron loaded the bases with a walk.

Randi Drinnon then won her eight-pitch at-bat, drawing a walk to score the second run of the night for the Hilltoppers.

Kennedy Stinson continued WKU’s offensive efforts with a single through the left side that scored another two. After Stinson’s single, the Bulldogs went to the bullpen for the first time in the game.

Both Katie Murphy and Kaytlan Kemp then drew four-pitch walks to force LA Tech’s third pitching change of the night.

White finished the night off for the Hilltoppers with a bases-clearing double to earn the walk off win and issue the Bulldogs their second shutout loss of the season.

This was the second game in as many weeks that the Hilltoppers scored seven runs in one inning. WKU scored seven in the fourth inning of their Saturday game against UTEP.

Friday’s game marks the second game Kendle White has been responsible for the game-winning runs.

WKU returns to the WKU Softball Complex on Saturday with a doubleheader against LA Tech. First pitch is scheduled for noon, while the second game will begin at approximately 2:30 p.m.
