Two of the Western Kentucky women’s basketball team’s breakout players are in the transfer portal.
Junior guard Josie Gilvin and sophomore guard Mackenzie Chatfield both entered the portal early this week, according to WKU website. They are the first two players to enter the portal.
Gilvin had a breakout season, earning second team All-Conference USA honors and was selected to the CUSA All-Defensive team. Gilvin averaged 13.1 points and 6.3 rebounds with 82 steals and 78 assists. She scored a career-high 31 points in the final regular-season game at Liberty and recorded six double-doubles.
The Sacred Heart product has appeared in 92 games since arriving at WKU in the fall of 2022, making 45 starts.
Chatfield bounced back from a tough freshman season to emerge as a key contributor in the backcourt. After playing in 21 games last year, she played in 31 games this year making eight starts – averaging 5.8 points with 74 assists.
The Auckland, New Zealand native scored a career-high 20 points in a win against Tennessee State in November and recorded her first career double-double with 13 points and 10 assists in a January win over Sam Houston.
She eclipsed the double-digit mark in scoring eight times this season, including 10 points in a season-ending loss to Middle Tennessee in the semifinals of the Conference USA Tournament.
WKU finished 23-9 last season. The Lady Toppers lose Alexis Mead, Destiny Salary and Mariama Sow from this year’s roster, which featured an influx of portal players last season.
