Western Kentucky’s men’s basketball team had two more players off this past season’s squad enter the NCAA transfer portal.
WKU confirmed Wednesday that senior guards Don McHenry and Enoch Kalambay have entered the portal, joining fellow guard Julius Thedford.
Both McHenry and Kalambay arrived at WKU ahead of the 2023-24 season as transfers from Indian Hills Community College, following then IHCC head coach Hank Plona to Bowling Green when Plona was named the top assistant under new coach Steve Lutz.
After leading the Hilltoppers to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 11 years, Lutz left to become the head coach at Oklahoma State. Plona was elevated to head coach just days later, and McHenry and Kalambay decided to stay at WKU and play for him in his first season leading the program.
Both McHenry and Kalambay won significant roles over two seasons with the Hilltoppers.
McHenry, a 6-foot-2 senior guard from Milwaukee, led the team in scoring two straight seasons. As a junior in the 2023-24 season, McHenry started all 34 games for the Hilltoppers and averaged team-best 15.1 points per game – fourth-best in Conference USA. McHenry was a All-CUSA first-team selection after that season that ended with a league tournament championship, followed by a loss to Marquette in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
McHenry was seen as a vital part of a largely intact roster from that CUSA tournament championship squad, and this past season he again led the way by averaging 17 points per game — fifth-best in CUSA – and posted double figures scoring in 15 straight outings to close the regular season and in 27-of-32 games on the season. McHenry accounted for 20-plus points in 13 total contests for the year.
McHenry gained an extra year of eligibility due to the NCAA’s decision to approve an extra year for previous JUCO athletes who had exhausted their eligibility after the 2024-25 season – a move made in response to Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia, another former JUCO player, winning a court injunction to play one more as his case that junior-college years should not count toward NCAA Division I eligibility proceeds.
Kalambay, a 6-6 native of native of Gatineau, Quebec, has been more of a solid contributor than a star for the Hilltoppers the past two seasons. As a junior in 2023-24, Kalambay played in all 34 game and made eight starts. He averaged 6.2 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.
This past season, Kalambay played in 28 games with 14 starts, averaging 8.2 points and 4.1 rebounds per outing.
