Lady Raiders run past Bowling Green

The Warren East softball team ran its way to a 7-4 win over Bowling Green on Monday at Bowling Green High School.

Warren East (3-1) was aggressive on the basepaths with nine steals, racing past the Lady Purples to make it two in a row after a come-from-behind win against Logan County on Friday.

“I’m very proud of, when we got on base, how aggressive we were,” Warren East coach Jennifer Brooks said. “We put ourselves in situations where a base hit would score somebody. I am really happy with Jordan (Brooks) with two hits and Addison Lee coming out and finally finding her bat this game. Same thing with Tristen Lindsey. Very proud of them.”

Bowling Green (2-2) was coming in off a 2-1 week that included a pair of run-rule wins. The BG offense was able to strike quickly, with an RBI single from Nyah Perkins and an RBI double by Amparo DeJesus making the score 2-0 after one inning.

Warren East answered in the second with the aid of the BG defense. A hit-by-pitch to start the inning, followed by two errors allowed the Lady Raiders to pull even. Warren East added one more run on a sacrifice fly by Jordan Brooks to make the score 3-2, with all three runs unearned.

“An error there and an error there,” Bowling Green coach Penny Reece said. “You don’t do that and you get to swing again, right away, instead of staying on the field that long — giving them that many runs. That was the difference. You take away the second inning and I think we keep ourselves right there close where we can win a ballgame.”

Warren East added two more runs in the third on a fielder’s choice and an RBI single by Lee to extend the lead, but Bowling Green answered in the bottom of the inning with a solo homer from Perkins to make the score 5-3.

The Lady Raiders scored twice again in the fourth — including an RBI single from Lindsey — to push the lead back to four.

“A lot of times it takes a second time around seeing a pitcher to get their timing down,” Jennifer Brooks said. “I wish we could jump out there the first inning and be all hits and scoring runs, but it often takes us that second, third time around.”

Bowling Green got an RBI single from Payton Steward to climb within three, but was unable to get any closer.

“Our motto right now is, ‘Progress, not perfection,’ because this team has got to do the little things that lead to winning,” Reece said. “They don’t know how to win right now. They’ve not been used to that. They’ve not been used to playing seven innings. They will tell you that last year they got used to playing five innings and then they were done — they were run-ruled.

“This team is headed in the right direction. They are. I couldn’t be more proud of how far they have come. We still just have a long way to go.”

Both teams finished with six hits.

Jennifer Brooks had two hits and two stolen bases for the Lady Raiders. She said BG’s turf field really helped with the running game.

“We don’t ever play on turf,” Jordan Brooks said. “It was a lot quicker, so we were able to get there. We just knew on passed balls (and wild pitches) we could get there easier than on dirt.”

Lee added two hits, while Kynleigh Barrick had two runs scored and two stolen bases for the Lady Raiders.

Perkins and Natalie Klein had two hits each for Bowling Green.

Warren East is scheduled to host Butler County on Tuesday, while Bowling Green is scheduled to travel to Allen County-Scottsville.
