Miners take down Hilltoppers 4-1

Western Kentucky’s softball team suffered its second loss of the weekend on Sunday, losing 4-1 and dropping the series to UTEP in El Paso, Texas.

WKU (15-13 overall, 2-6 Conference USA) in in the first inning, but was unable to answer the Miners’ (12-16 overall, 2-7 CUSA) four runs in the fourth.

The Hilltoppers got on the scoreboard in the top of the first, only the sixth time they’ve done so this season. Leadoff hitter Kendle White laid a bunt down the first base line to open the game with a single.

Senior catcher Randi Drinnon walked to put White on second, when sophomore infielder Annie White doubled to right center to bring White home.

First-year right-hander Erica Houge kept the Miners off the board until the fourth inning, when UTEP hit two two-run home runs to go up 4-2.

Houge recorded two strikeouts in the loss, while Rylan Smith collected four strikeouts in relief.

WKU’s all-time record against UTEP shifts to 12-6 and 5-4 when playing in El Paso.

The Hilltoppers will host Louisville on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the WKU Softball Complex.
