GEO International High School programming is being transferred to Warren County Public Schools’ four traditional high schools.
The specific fate for the school for international and refugee students is unclear.
“This change will allow for an expansion in comprehensive learning opportunities as students can take part in a wider range of clubs and extracurricular activities, providing them with more possibilities to explore their interests, engage in opportunities both inside and outside the classrooms, and further build relationships with their peers,” WCPS said in a Monday statement.
Established in 2016, GEO International is “a two-year transitional high school for newcomer international and refugee students in Warren County,” according to its website.
“GIHS’ mission is to provide students with a safe learning environment full of multiple educational opportunities, help accelerate English language growth, and keep students on track to graduate and become successful and productive citizens,” the website states.
The school had 149 students in the 2023-24 school year, according to the year’s Kentucky School Report Card. It’s also particularly diverse: 41.6% Latino, 38.9% African American, 9.4% white, 8.7% Asian and 1.3% Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, according to the School Report Card.
“We want to express our sincere appreciation to our families, staff and community members for their support and involvement in GEO International High School,” WCPS said in its Monday statement. “We look forward to your continued support as we build upon the current programming to further expand innovative, engaged opportunities for our students.”
No other information was released with the announcement Monday.
Bowling Green Independent Schools operates a similar Teranga Academy for Bowling Green Junior High and Bowling Green High School students who have been in the United States for three years or less.
