A Bowling Green man charged in a fatal 2021 shooting off Nashville Road pleaded guilty to several crimes Tuesday.

Kamonte Grissom, 22, entered a guilty plea in Warren Circuit Court to charges of murder, first-degree robbery, tampering with physical evidence and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.

Grissom had been in custody at Warren County Regional Jail since shortly after a Dec. 21, 2021, shooting outside a gas station on Nashville Road that left Terrance R. Barton, 20, dead.

Grissom’s plea to the robbery count was an Alford plea, in which he denied wrongdoing on that particular charge but acknowledged that a jury could have returned a guilty verdict based on the evidence.

The Bowling Green Police Department investigated Barton’s death, having been called out to the Marathon gas station, 2229 Nashville Road, on the night of the shooting.

Officers found a BMW 320i Series driven by Barton had struck another vehicle on Nashville Road and Emmett Avenue.

Barton was found in the BMW with multiple gunshot wounds and taken to The Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Grissom’s attorney, Jeb Dennis of the Department of Public Advocacy, gave a narrative of events in court Tuesday to support his client’s guilty plea on the charges against him.

Dennis said police found evidence that Grissom and Barton had texted one another prior to meeting, with the two planning to meet up at the gas station parking lot, where it was planned for Grissom to buy a quantity of marijuana from Barton.

Grissom arrived armed and without money, and fired several shots into Barton’s vehicle, Dennis said.

Surveillance video footage showed Grissom wearing a hooded sweatshirt that he was found to be wearing later that night as he was walking on Nashville Road, Dennis said.

City police detained him, and Grissom consented to an interview, during which he acknowledged that he planned to rob Barton and that he fired until the gun jammed, according to court records.

Grissom told detectives he disposed of the handgun used in the shooting near a fence line beside an apartment complex, and city police were able to recover the weapon.

Grissom accepted a plea agreement that recommends he serve a 30-year prison sentence.

Warren County Commonwealth’s Attorney Kori Beck Bumgarner disclosed in court that Barton’s parents authorized her to enter into plea negotiations with Grissom and his attorney and that they had been advised of the potential for a jury to consider whether to convict Grissom for lesser offenses at trial.

After Grissom accepted the 30-year offer following a mediation, Barton’s parents expressed that they wished to retract the offer, Bumgarner said.

Barton’s parents addressed the court as well, saying they preferred that the case proceed to trial.

Grissom will return to court April 15 for final sentencing by Warren Circuit Judge J.B. Hines.
