Three Lady Toppers Earn All-CUSA Honors

Western Kentucky women’s basketball team had three players earning postseason All-Conference USA honors, the league announced on Monday.

Senior guard Alexis Mead was named to the All-CUSA first team, while junior guard Josie Gilvin and graduate guard Destiny Salary were named to the All-CUSA Second Team.

Mead and Gilvin were also named to the CUSA All-Defensive Team.

Mead has the best assist/turnover ratio in CUSA this season with a 1.69 mark and she’s WKU’s leading scorer, averaging 13.3 points per game. She’s third in the league in assists per game (4.0), second in free-throw percentage (86.7%) and sixth in steals per game (2.2). The 5-foot-4 guard is averaging 5.3 rebounds per game in conference play.

The Moreno Valley, California, native is currently fourth all-time at WKU in career steals (238), fifth in career starts (123), sixth in career assists (461), 10th in made 3-point field goals (160) and 25th in all-time scoring (1,345).

Gilvin has emerged as one of the best players in CUSA in her junior year.

She’s WKU’s second leading scorer, putting up 13.0 points per game, and she’s the squad’s leading rebounder, pulling down 5.9 boards per game. The Louisville native is second in CUSA in steals per game, averaging 2.6. In just CUSA play, Gilvin is averaging 14.3 points per game (seventh in the league), 6.7 rebounds per game (tied for eighth in the league), 2.9 steals per game (first in the league), 2.6 assists per game (ninth in the league), and 1.06 blocks per game (fifth in the league).

Gilvin is also shooting 55.6% from the field in conference play, which is the third best mark in the league. For the season, Gilvin is shooting 54.1% from the field, 42.2% from 3-point range, and 80.9% from the free-throw line.

Salary has been the leading scorer for WKU in nine games this season, scoring in double figures 19 times and notching four 20-point performances. She’s the third leading scorer for WKU, averaging 12.6 points per game and has the second most assists on the team, dishing out 80 on the season.

During CUSA play, Salary is putting up 13.1 points per game which is the ninth most in the league. She’s shooting 43.5% from the field during conference play which is the eighth-best percentage among CUSA players. She’s also dishing out 2.8 assists per game (ninth in the league).

WKU was the only team to land two players on the All-Defensive Team and tied Middle Tennessee and Liberty with the most All-Conference players.

The Lady Toppers will be back in action against FIU at 2 p.m.on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the CUSA Championship in Huntsville, Alabama.
