Sam Houston claims 8-4 win over visiting WKU

Western Kentucky’s softball team dropped its first Conference USA game of the season on Saturday, 8-4, against Sam Houston in Huntsville, Texas.

The Bearkats (10-13 overall, 1-1 CUSA) scored a total of seven runs in the first two innings and never surrendered the lead.

WKU (14-7 overall, 1-1 CUSA) began to fight back in the top of the third as sophomore infielder Morgan Sharpe grounded out to third to bring in fellow second-year Kendle White, who reached earlier with a single.

After keeping SHSU off the board in the home half of the third, junior outfielder Kaytlan Kemp earned her third RBI of the year with a single through the left side to bring in sophomore infielder Annie White.

Weather paused the game for just under three hours after the top half of the fifth.

Sam Houston scored another run in the bottom of the fifth to bring the score to 8-2.

In the top of the sixth, WKU scored two more runs thanks to a double from White to put the Tops within four, 8-4.

WKU finishes its first CUSA series of the 2025 season against Sam Houston on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. CT.
