Western Kentucky’s women’s tennis team opened its nine-match homestand with a 7-0 win over Missouri State on Sunday at the Warren County Tennis Facility at Michael O. Buchanon Park.

The Lady Toppers have now won back-to-back matches and are 6-3 overall this season.

“We have a lot of confidence right now, just winning these past two matches this week,” WKU senior Sofia Blanco said in a news release. “Tough teams, but we were able to overcome them. I think we have a lot of confidence on the court and it’s great to play with this team.”

The Lady Toppers won the doubles point for the sixth time in nine matches this season.

Emily Schut and Mia Miranda improved to 7-2 together in doubles this season, including 3-1 from the No. 1 position.

The No. 85-ranked doubles team of Rachel Hermanova and Blanco improved to 4-4 together this season. Blanco now has 42 career doubles wins, which is second-most in program history. Hermanova now has 20 career doubles wins, which is 12th-most in program history.

Hermanova’s singles win was the 55th of her career and extended her program record. She is now 6-3 this season, all from the No. 1 position.

Blanco improved to 6-2 this season in singles with her win on Sunday, with all matches coming at the No. 2 position. The win was the 46th singles win of her career, which is second-most in program history.

Miranda improved to 4-4 in singles play this season with her win on Sunday.

Sunskrithi Damera improved to 4-3 this season in singles play. Her win was the 24th singles win of her WKU career, which moves her into a tie for 12th on the program’s career singles wins list.

Mariana Zegada improved to 5-3 this season in singles. Sunday’s win was the 28th singles win of her WKU career. She is now two wins from being tied for eighth in program history.

“I think coming out of Friday we had a lot of confidence,” Schut said. “Coming here in the doubles, picking it up directly. Same with the singles. On all courts the energy was great. I think we did a great job having confidence.”

Schut improved to 6-1 in singles play as a Lady Topper. She is now 5-0 from the No. 6 position.

“Good win over a soon-to-be Conference USA team. Our doubles was really good today, winning quickly at one and two,” WKU coach Greg Davis said. “Then we won six first sets in singles. That made a big difference. The one thing we always talk about is having momentum. With four tough matches coming up this week, that’s something we were really stressing last week – getting some momentum back. I think we’ve done that. We’re playing a tough Samford team on Wednesday. I would say our outside season is going to start this week, so we’re looking forward to getting outside and playing some matches this week.”

The Lady Toppers will continue the homestand with a noon match against Samford on Wednesday.
