Western Kentucky’s women’s tennis team defeated Belmont 5-2 on Friday at the Ensworth Tennis Center in Nashville.

The team’s win was highlighted by Sofia Blanco’s 6-1, 6-0 singles victory over Belmont’s Viktoria Kliimand, which moved Blanco into sole possession of second place on the program’s career singles wins list. Blanco, who now has 45 career singles wins, was already second on WKU’s career doubles wins list.

The Lady Toppers improved to 5-3 overall this season and 2-1 in road matches.

“Good win on the road,” WKU coach Greg Davis said in a news release. “We competed well today in singles. Quick turnaround against a very improved future CUSA team coming Sunday. We expect a very difficult match.”

The only Lady Topper ahead of Blanco on the career singles wins list is teammate Rachel Hermanova. Blanco improved to 5-2 in singles this season with her win.

Mariana Zegada’s singles win was the 27th of her career, which is ninth-most in program history. She is three singles wins from being tied for eighth in program history in career singles wins.

Sunskrithi Damera’s singles win was the 23rd of her WKU career. She is one singles win away from being tied for 12th in program history in career singles wins.

Elizabeth Sobieski picked up her first singles win with the Lady Toppers on Friday.

Zegada and Damera moved to 3-1 together this season in doubles. Zegada’s doubles win was the 35th of her WKU career, which is fourth in program history. She is now two doubles wins away from being tied for third all-time in program history.

WKU dropped the doubles point for the third time in eight matches this season.

The Lady Toppers will open a nine-match homestand on Sunday with a 1 p.m. match against Missouri State at the Warren County Tennis Facility at Michael O. Buchanon Park.
