A woman and her 7-year-old child lost their lives Saturday night after their vehicle was swept away by flooding in Hart County.

Hart County Coroner Tony Roberts said that first responders from Hart County and Campbellsville were called to Campground Road near Bacon Creek in Bonnieville for a water rescue around 8:15 p.m. Saturday, but rising waters and nighttime conditions forced a halt to rescue efforts.

Emergency workers were able to recover the child’s body, but the mother and the vehicle remain submerged as of 10 a.m. Sunday, Roberts said.

“The creek has risen double what it was last night,” Roberts said. “Rescue crews and dive teams are going to put a game plan together to try to retrieve the mother and the vehicle…we hope people keep the family in everyone’s prayers.”

Authorities have not released the names of the two victims.

A powerful storm system produced the flooding, dropping 4-6 inches of rain across southcentral Kentucky.

According to the Kentucky Mesonet weather tracking site, Simpson County received 6.42 inches of precipitation in a 48-hour period as of Sunday morning, the highest reading in the area.

Rain turned to snow overnight into Sunday as temperatures plunged below freezing.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear announced on social media Sunday morning that President Donald Trump approved his request for an emergency disaster declaration, making federal funding available to affected areas.

Warren County Government listed 14 road closures on its Facebook page as of Sunday morning, and another eight roads were noted for having high water but remaining passable.

Southcentral Kentucky remained under a flood warning Sunday morning issued by the National Weather Service.
