Torrential rains Saturday swelled waterways and flooded roads, stranding at least two motorists in southcentral Kentucky who required rescue.
As of about 4 p.m. Saturday, 4.75 inches of rain fell in Simpson County since midnight, according to the Kentucky Mesonet weather tracking website.
That measurement represents the largest measured rainfall in the state for that time period, followed by the 4.54 inches tallied in Allen County.
Warren County received 4.01 inches of rainfall as of 4 p.m. Saturday, according to Kentucky Mesonet.
Floodwaters overtook some low-lying roads, which led to authorities in Warren County being called out to assist a stranded motorist.
The Warren County Sheriff’s Office said it responded along with the Hadley Volunteer Fire Department to assist a motorist on Jackson Bridge Road.
Jackson Bridge Road at Hammett Hill was closed, along with seven other roads in Warren County due to flooding, according to a post Saturday afternoon on Warren County government’s Facebook page.
The Western Kentucky University Police Department announced Saturday that Lost River Cave Valley was closed due to flooding.
Simpson County Judge-Executive Mason Barnes posted on his Facebook page that Simpson County law enforcement and fire and rescue agencies conducted one vehicle water rescue there and responded to several other flood-related calls.
The Simpson County Office of Emergency Management website posted 13 road closures as of mid-Saturday afternoon.
“We will continue to get more rain into the overnight and the only place for the additional water to go is up,” said a post on the Simpson County Office of Emergency Management’s Facebook page. “PLEASE!!!! Do not go out driving, especially after dark.”
The National Weather Service forecast additional showers and possibly a thunderstorm overnight for the area, with new rainfall amounts between two and three inches possible.
NWS-issued flood warnings for Green River near Mammoth Cave in Edmonson County and at Woodbury and Rochester in Butler County were also in effect beginning Saturday afternoon.
