Western Kentucky’s softball team wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in either game on Friday as the Hilltoppers scored a total of 10 runs in the first two innings of both games against Southeast Missouri and Eastern Illinois at the Cardinal Clash in Troy, Alabama.
The Tops (3-4) would go on to win the first against SEMO (0-2 overall) 6-1, and the second against EIU (2-4 overall) 10-0, securing both their first run-rule and shutout win of the season.
Redshirt junior Jenna Blanton got the ball rolling for the Tops in the opener against Southeast Missouri as the lefty placed a perfect bunt down the third-base line.
Two errors and an RBI single from sophomore infielder Maci Masters helped the Tops take a 3-0 lead.
WKU freshman third baseman Macy Gregor started her season with a single through the left side that scored sophomore first baseman Annie White, who reached on error earlier in the inning.
A single from junior outfielder Kaytlan Kemp and walk to sophomore outfielder Kendle White loaded the bases, and Blanton drew a walk to score Gregor.
In the top half of the sixth, White tallied a triple. A sacrifice-bunt-turned-single from Blanton brought in White for the sixth and final run of the game for the Hilltoppers.
SEMO collected its lone run in the top of the seventh, but WKU pitcher Maddy Wood shut it down with a final ground out to secure the third win of the season.
Wood threw her first career complete game, allowing only one run on five hits and collecting three strikeouts,
Blanton led the way offensively with two hits and two RBIs.
The Hilltoppers then handled Eastern Illinois 10-0 with both their first run-rule and shutout win of the season.
Gregor finished the game with three hits and two runs scored, while WKU pitcher Rylan Smith was one hit shy of a no-hitter. Smith finished the game with five strikeouts, one hit allowed and only 73 pitches thrown.
WKU continues in Alabama with two more games on Saturday against Eastern Illinois and Troy. First pitch against Eastern Illinois is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. CT and first pitch against Troy is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CT.
