Kunkel, Crenshaw lead WKU at UAB invitational

Western Kentucky’s track and field teams tallied 11 new personal records in track events and two in field events in the UAB Green & Gold Invite on Saturday in Birmingham, Alabama.
WKU also notched 11 top-five finishers in the day’s events, with Kinley Kunkel and Sam Crenshaw claiming first place in their respective events.
“I thought the team had a productive day in competition after a tough week for them,” WKU interim head coach Lee Wood said in a news release. “We had several athletes with PRs and heading in the right direction as we head back to Brimingham next weekend.”
On the track, the Hilltoppers had a stellar day with multiple personal records and top finishers. Kunkel highlighted the Tops on the track with her PR in the women’s 3,000-meter race where she took first place, finishing in 10 minutes, 9 seconds. Addie Frisch managed a PR in the women’s 800, finishing in 2:18 good for a fifth-place finish.
Kameron Horton continues to have a strong indoor campaign as he notched a third-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles. He also added a fourth-place finish in the 60-meter dash final.
Sanaa Washington set a PR in the women’s 200-meter dash and Morgan Moore set one in the women’s 400. In the men’s 400, Brunel Desinor claimed a top-five finish in 48.83.
In field events, the vaulters continued to shine. Crenshaw once again took first in the men’s event, while Sophia Roskoski claimed a second-place finish in the women’s event by clearing 3.81 meters, finishing first among collegiate competitors. Luke Stegman led WKU in the ring with a fifth-place finish in the men’s weight throw (17.58 meters) and a sixth-place finish in the men’s shot put.
In the men’s mile a pair of freshmen, Tyler Pfefferkorn and Parker Smith set new personal bests. Pfefferkorn finished in 4:25, while Smith wrapped up in 4:27. Mary Dye set a new PR in the women’s mile, finishing in 5:17, good for 14th place.
In the men’s 3,000 meters, Bowling Green native Michael House led the way for WKU with a PR of 8:59, good for 12th place.
WKU will be back in action Feb. 14-15 at the Samford Bulldog Invite in Birmingham, Alabama. This will be the Tops’ final meet before CUSA Championships.
