A man arrested on suspicion of driving a truck that struck and killed a bicyclist before leaving the scene is due back in court Wednesday following his arrest.
Michael Mestas, 41, of Rockfield, was arrested Thursday by the Bowling Green Police Department, which investigated the Jan. 18 incident on Louisville Road that led to the death of Terry Zweig, 46, of Bowling Green.
Mestas was arraigned Friday in Warren District Court on a felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident/failure to render aid or assistance (with death or serious physical injury).
Court records indicate that a public defender was appointed to represent Mestas, who will return before Warren District Judge Kim Geoghegan for a preliminary hearing on Wednesday.
City police officers were called around 7:15 a.m. on Jan. 18 to the area of Louisville Road and Bristow Road on a reported hit-and-run collision.
Zweig, who police say was riding his bicycle south toward Bowling Green, was found in a grassy area beside Louisville Road and was “beyond any life-saving measures,” as described in an arrest citation.
An autopsy conducted on Jan. 19 indicated that Zweig had multiple injuries consistent with a vehicle collision.
Police gathered video surveillance footage from the area enabling them to identify a pickup truck believed to have been involved in the incident.
The truck could be seen pulling into UV Liquors on Louisville Road after the collision, according to an arrest citation.
The BGPD posted images of the vehicle, a red Dodge pickup truck, and the suspected driver on its social media accounts Thursday afternoon and asked for assistance in identifying the person.
Police received multiple tips from people who identified the truck as belonging to Mestas and that he was the man pictured in the images, records show.
BGPD phoned Mestas on Thursday, and he agreed to come to police headquarters to speak with detectives.
“While speaking with me, Mestas provided information on how his vehicle was damaged, as well as stated that the vehicle in the Facebook post was, in fact, his vehicle,” BGPD Detective Matthew Poore wrote in an arrest citation. “When further questioned about the incident, he asked to speak with an attorney.”
Mestas was placed in Warren County Regional Jail, where Geoghegan set a $6,000 cash bond.
