A man who was arrested earlier this year after attempting to arrange for sex with an undercover officer posing as a 14-year-old was sentenced Monday to 10 years in prison.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Kentucky announced that Corey James Jarboe, 30, of Owensboro, received the sentence in U.S. District Court in Bowling Green, where Jarboe earlier pleaded guilty to attempted online enticement of a minor and attempted transfer of obscene material to a minor.
The 10-year sentence represents the mandatory minimum penalties Jarboe faced for his crimes.
Ahead of Monday’s sentencing, Jarboe’s attorney, Steven Boling, and Assistant U.S Attorney Nick Rabold filed separate sentencing memoranda requesting U.S. District Court Chief Judge Greg Stivers impose the 10-year sentence.
Both attorneys argued that the sentence would be sufficient but not greater than necessary to punish Jarboe and would deter others from committing similar crimes.
The Bowling Green field office of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Kentucky State Police investigated the case.
According to court filings, Jarboe began messaging online on Jan. 18, 2024, with an undercover Kentucky State Police investigator posing as a 14-year-old girl.
After a day of chatting, Jarboe took the conversation into a sexual direction, and at one point asked for the agent’s age, receiving a response that she was 14, court records show.
“(Jarboe) stated he knew sex between them would be illegal but that simply meant they needed to be careful about being caught,” a copy of Jarboe’s plea agreement stated. “He sent the undercover agent a screenshot of a Google search result indicating sexual contact between them is a crime.”
Court records indicate that the agent attempted to divert the conversation away from sexual matters and indicated that she felt pressured, but Jarboe persisted, sending the agent “grooming material” that included a chart of sexual positions and a picture of his exposed genitals on Jan. 19, 2024.
Jarboe asked to meet the purported juvenile at her residence for sex in Bowling Green and he traveled to an apartment complex where he believe the child resided on Feb. 2.
Police arrested Jarboe when he arrived there, and a search of his vehicle turned up flowers and two boxes of condoms, court records show.
