According to BGPD, Tylan J. Barnett informed detectives that he was at the address because his sister had contacted him earlier that night and informed him that she believed someone was trying to break into the residence.

Barnett claimed that after he arrived there he saw two people outside the residence and went outside with a gun, firing shots at one of the people running from the apartment building, BGPD said.

Barnett reportedly told police that he discarded the firearm in a brush line next to the apartment.

Police have not released the name of the 16-year-old gunshot victim as of late Sunday morning.

Barnett was arrested on charges of murder and tampering with physical evidence and was booked into Warren County Regional Jail.

The investigation is ongoing and city police in a social media post asked anyone with additional information to contact BGPD at (270) 393-4000.
