Bowling Green wins 20th straight region swim title

The Bowling Green swim and diving team secured a 20th straight region title during Saturday’s Region 2 meet at Owensboro Health Park.

Bowling Green claimed the combined team title, the boys’ team title and the girls’ team title to earn the sweep in the team categories.

Warren Woodall earned a pair of individual victories for Bowling Green, winning the 50-yard freestyle and the 100 butterfly. Alfonso Verduzco earned the win in the 200 freestyle and finished second in the 500 freestyle.

Woodall and Verduzco joined Matias Verduzco and James Dinan to finish second in the 200 freestyle medley and 200 medley relay. Jeremiah Lewis finished second in diving.

On the girls’ side for Bowling Green, Riley Crowe earned wins in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle.

Other local boys’ winners included South Warren’s Kenan Aganovic, who had four total wins – two individual and two relays. Aganovic earned the win in the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle, while joining Brian Bosse, Noah Walters and Lari Skeric to win the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay.

Skeric won the 100 freestyle and finished second in the 50 freestyle.

Bosse finished second in the 200 freestyle and the 100 backstroke, while Greenwood’s Caden Moseley finished in the 200 individual medley.

On the girls’ side, Greenwood’s Brianne Flikkema won the 100 fly and finished second in the 100 breaststroke. She joined Maddie Boyer, Leela Kaul and Erin Hogan to finish second in the 200 freestyle relay.

South Warren’s Ella Payne, Avery Beil, Chloe Parsons and Anna Satterfield won the 200 medley relay, while Beil, Satterfield, Payne and Bella Walters finished second in the 400 medley relay.

Satterfield finished second in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle, while Payne finished second in the 100 backstroke.

The top two competitors in each event and the next 10 best times in Region 1, 2 and 3 advance to the semi-state round which will take place at Bowling Green on Feb. 8.

The top three at each semi-state and the next best 15 times statewide advance to the state finals which begins Feb. 20 at the Lancaster Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Kentucky in Lexington.
