Paul Rexford Hammersley, Jr.

Bowling Green – Paul Rexford Hammersley, (January 22, 1932 – December 26, 2024). Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, he was the son of Paul Hammersley, Sr. and Sally Jones Hammersley.

Paul went to Center Grove High School and later went to the United States Marine Corps 1951-1954. Paul served in the Korean War as one of the elite “Frozen Chosen” in the 5th Marine Division and receive recognition as a handler of the marine war horse called Sergeant Reckless.

Paul and Sgt. Reckless are pictured in the United States Marine Corps Museum in Quantico, Virginia Paul spent his work life at Indiana Bell, AT&T, and also as president of the Indiana Telco Credit Union.

In later years, he worked as a farmer and enjoyed working on his Greenhill farm south of Bowling Green, Kentucky. Paul was also active in the Masonic lodge and Scottish Rite Cathedral. He enjoyed traveling, riding motorcycles with friends, and hunting.

Paul is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Comfort Hammersley, sons, Rex and John; brother, Bruce Hammersley; and sister, Martha Heitkamp. Preceding him in death is a sister, Irma Jenkins. Paul has three grandchildren, Elizabeth, Sam, and Missy and four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

There will be a Celebration of Life on January 6th,2025 at Bethany Baptist Church in Alvaton, Ky. (659 Alvaton-Greenhill Road, Bowling Green, KY 42103). Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until noon at the Church with service to follow. J.C. Kirby & Son Funeral Chapels has been entrusted with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy can be made to Hospice of Southern Kentucky or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
