Lady Scotties earn first win of season

After some near misses, the Glasgow girls’ basketball team finally found the mark – grinding out a 30-25 victory over South Warren in the Fourth Region State Farm Classic on Saturday at Bowling Green High School.
Despite shooting 23 percent from the field Glasgow (1-3) took advantage of a strong defensive effort to limit a short-handed South Warren and earn its first victory of the season.
The win was a welcome sight for coach Kelsey Kirkpatrick after seeing her Lady Scotties lose close battles with Greenwood and Logan County to start the season.
“We’ve tested the girls and we’ve challenged them each day,” Kirkpatrick said. “They kind of rose to the challenge today. Of course we made some young mistakes but that is expected. I told them we are not supposed to be peaking right now. We have to stay the course and keep taking small steps to get to where we want to be.”
Playing again without leading scorer McLaine Hudson, away from the team this weekend due to a softball commitment with the U.S Junior National team, South Warren (0-4) got off to a solid start. The Spartans led 11-7 after one and pushed the margin to 13-7 on a layup from Averi Fugate with 4:36 left in the first half.
The South Warren offense would go cold from there, held without a field goal for the rest of the first half. Despite the drought, four free throws helped South Warren maintain a 17-11 advantage at halftime.
Jenna Lindsey split a pair of free throws to make the score 18-11 to open the third, but it would be the only point in the quarter for the Spartans – whose field goal drought continued. Glasgow responded with a 10-0 run to surge in front 21-18 heading into the final period.
Lindsey’s 3 ended the drought and tied the score 21-21 with 7:22 remaining in the game. Cynthia Austin’s layup with 5:47 put the Lady Scotties back in front for good. South Warren got as close as one, but Glasgow clinched it going 5-for-6 from the free throw line in the final two minutes.
“They made me nervous,” Kirkpatrick said. “They were trying to stall and we were not stalling. We were just looking for the right shot. Overall I was proud of them on the offensive end and the defensive end tonight.”
Kayla Kirkpatrick led Glasgow with eight points, while Austin added seven points.
Fugate and Ashley Overbay had six points each to lead South Warren
“Not having McLaine made a difference, but they also have some really great talent on that floor,” Kelsey Kirkpatrick said. “It’s hard not to lose sight of one of them. I thought the girls did a very good job of communicating and staying with the game plan.”
Both teams return to action at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. South Warren will play at Barren County, while Glasgow travels to Russellville.
