Spartans rev up offense in win at Allen County-Scottsville

SCOTTSVILLE – The scoreboard could barely keep up with the South Warren boys’ basketball team during Thursday’s 100-72 win at Allen County-Scottsville.

South Warren (4-1) shot 55% from the field to overwhelm the host Patriots and cruise to a fourth straight win. The Spartans scored 100 points for the second time in program history and have now scored at least 88 points in the last three games.

While the offensive output has been impressive, South Warren coach Carlos Quarles said it is the overall team play that has pleased him the most.

“What I take more pride in is I enjoy our players playing together and celebrating each other,” Quarles said. “Playing as a team – that is really rewarding as a coach to see that on the floor.”

Allen County-Scottsville (2-1) jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but South Warren was able to gain control by the end of the first quarter. An 11-0 run made the score 21-14 after one, with the lead growing to 39-21 after a bucket from Griffin Rardin midway through the second quarter.

“We wanted to force tempo to our favor,” Quarles said. “We wanted to speed them up to play at our pace. We figured by the time the second half hit that our depth would play a big factor in the game.”

The Patriots trimmed the deficit to 45-31 at halftime and got a spark from Kyler Pedigo to start the second half. Pedigo hit five 3-pointers in a five-minute span to shave the deficit to 58-50 late in the third. South Warren was able to right the ship and close the quarter with a 9-2 spurt, then opened the fourth with a 22-6 run that made the score 91-58.

The only drama left was if the Spartans could hit the 100-point mark. Isaiah Bridges’ 3 with 19 seconds left secured that feat.

Rardin led the Spartans with 29 points.

“It was my first time getting face-guarded this year,” Rardin said. “It was a new experience, so I really couldn’t pass the ball like I normally do. I was setting screens and making other plays as well.”

Jaxen Decker add 15 points for South Warren, part of a balanced attack that featured nine players scoring at least six points.

Quarles said he likes how quickly his team his jelled since incorporating players who missed the season opener returning from the South Warren football team.

“We are getting our football guys in shape,” Quarles said. “Now we are getting our chemistry together and we are learning from each other how we operate. It’s a joy to watch these guys.”

Pedigo had 29 points to lead Allen County-Scottsville, while Robert Robledo added 16 points.

South Warren will play Christian County in the Boys’ Holiday Classic at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Hopkinsville High School. Allen County-Scottsville will host Hart County at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Avery Morris scored a career high 36 points as the Lady Patriots bounced back from a loss to Metcalfe County with a convincing win against a short-handed Spartans team.

“I was proud of the whole team,” Allen County-Scottsville coach Greg Dunn said. “I thought they played a really good game against a solid, solid team. South Warren is always going to be good. They’ve got a great coaching staff. I am just proud of them to be able to get this second win of the season.”

South Warren (0-3) was without leading scorer McLaine Hudson, absent due to a softball commitment with the U.S Junior National team. The Spartans still started fast, scoring the first six points before Morris got going for ACS.

Morris scored 11 points in the first quarter, including a three-point play in the final seconds that gave Allen County-Scottsville an 18-15 advantage.

Allen County-Scottsville (2-1) opened the second quarter with a 14-3 run to push the lead to 32-18, with the Lady Patriots firmly in control with a 39-24 lead at halftime.

“We came out with a bunch of energy,” Morris said. “We wanted to bounce back after Metcalfe County. That was a hurtful loss. We just had a bunch of energy and came out and wanted to win on our home court.”

Allen County continued to pull away in the second half, leading by as many as 27 before the Spartans closed the night scoring the final six points.

Morris added six rebounds and six steals to go with her huge offensive night.

“It was good,” Morris said. “I was glad to be on my home court with my teammates. I love them. They support me a lot. They help me do what I do.”

Aubrie Naiser added 10 points for ACS, while Riley Roy and Allison Ford added nine points each.

Jooniper Strow led South Warren with 14 points, while Averi Fugate added 12 points.

Both teams will compete in the 4th Region State Farm Challenge at Bowling Green High School on Saturday. Allen County-Scottsville will face Greenwood at 10:30 a.m. South Warren will play Glasgow at 5:30 p.m.
