A grand jury has indicted a Bowling Green man accused of breaking into an apartment and raping a woman there.

Robert Lee Jones, 54, was formally charged with first-degree rape, second-degree burglary and first-degree sexual abuse.

Jones was arrested Oct. 6 by the Bowling Green Police Department after a woman staying at a Chestnut Street apartment from which she had been recently evicted identified him as the man who came into the apartment and sexually assaulted her.

The woman reported the alleged incident to the Bowling Green Police Department on Oct. 5, telling police that the man entered the apartment in the early morning hours on that date.

According to court records, the woman had been evicted from the apartment but was allowed by her landlord to stay there temporarily as she moved out her belongings.

At a preliminary hearing October in Warren District Court, BGPD Detective Jess Parry testified that the woman reported living alone there while her boyfriend was incarcerated and she was sleeping on a mattress on the kitchen floor.

On the date of the alleged incident, the woman reported being asleep on the mattress when she woke up to Jones on top of her, engaging in nonconsensual sex acts, Parry said.

“She stated she tried to get (Jones) off her, but he was too large, so she just kind of laid there and tried to pretend the rape wasn’t happening,” Parry said in court.

Police collected bedding from the apartment and a sexual assault kit was collected.

The woman named Jones as her alleged assailant, saying she was acquainted with him through other homeless and precariously housed people but that they had never been involved in any romantic relationship and he had never lived with her, Parry said.

The next day, the woman called police to report that Jones was outside near her apartment, prompting a response from officers.

Soon after police made contact with Jones, another man approached and reported that he overheard Jones brag about the alleged assault to another man, Parry said.

Jones was taken into custody and agreed to an interview at the police station.

Parry said that Jones initially denied having any sexual contact with the woman, but he changed his account over the course of the interview.

“The nature of his story kept changing,” Parry said in court in October.

Jones reportedly acknowledged sexual contact with the woman, but maintained that it was consensual, although he told police that the woman did not give verbal consent, according to Parry.

Jones was scheduled to appear Monday in Warren Circuit Court for arraignment, and he is in Warren County Regional Jail under a $25,000 cash bond.
