O’Henry’s beloved short story “The Gift of the Magi” will be the theme of BG Trolley’s holiday tour, “Christmas Presents of a Christmas Past.”
Tour dates are Wednesday and Thursday and Dec. 11, 12 and 19. Guests will check in at 6 p.m. at the Historic RailPark & Train Museum with the trolley departing at 6:30 p.m.
The tour will feature cast members in costume as characters from the story and will be set against the backdrop of Bowling Green in 1909.
The trolley will take guests and some of the characters to Fountain Square Park, where other characters will await them.
“Since Bowling Green had a trolley back in 1909, it all fits together,” said Debbie Eaton, trolley tour and programming manager at the RailPark.
“The Gift of the Magi” tells the tale of a young couple, Jim and Della, who sell their most prized possessions – for Jim it was a watch and for Della, her hair – in order to buy each other meaningful gifts for Christmas. Ironically, Jim purchases a set of combs for Della’s hair and Della purchases a chain for Jim’s watch.
Eaton, who plays the older, eccentric hair shop owner Madame Sofronie, said that the tour will include a party and meet and greet at Spencer’s Coffee.
“When Madame Sofronie arrives, the party can truly begin,” she said.
Host Ryan Pattee will portray O’Henry. Other cast members include Brandey Freeman as Della, Jason Cole as Jim and Jim Sears as Mr. Morris.
“Everyone is doing such a great job with their parts and we have had so much fun rehearsing,” Eaton said. “We hope that shows up in our performances and that those who attend enjoy our little story with a Bowling Green twist.”
She said the tour, which requires very little walking, is also a great way to meet other people and enjoy the Christmas atmosphere on the square.
Tickets are $20 for ages 13 and over and $15 for ages 12 and under.
