The City of Bowling Green proved Monday that rubber ducks, much like Thanksgiving turkeys, cannot fly after the inaugural Downtown BG Duck Drop saw 300 ducks poured onto The Fringe food truck park.
“We bought 300 ducks and we sold 300 ducks,” Downtown Development Coordinator Telia Butler told the Daily News.
Monday’s duck drop was the first public fundraiser for A Better BGKY, a nonprofit started by the city a few months ago. The event raised money for Duncan Hines Days.
Ducks were sold online through Eventbrite for $5 apiece, and up to 10 could be bought per person. Butler said the last duck was sold on Saturday and, after fees, the city netted over $1,000.
Butler said on Nov. 16 that the drop was done to “put a feeler out there” and see how the public reacted.
“People started buying ducks like hotcakes,” she said then.
At noon on Monday, the ducks were poured out of a Bowling Green Public Works bucket truck and onto a small, duck shaped target drawn in chalk.
To win, a duck had to land on or closest to the eye on the drawing. The winning duck, No. 186, hit the blacktop six inches from the eye.
Representatives from several city departments were present at the drop including BGPW, Neighborhood and Community Services, Bowling Green Parks and Recreation and the city’s public information office. Mayor Todd Alcott, City Manager Jeff Meisel and others were also present.
Public Works head Andy Souza said his department was “super excited” when the idea for the drop came up.
“I think my guys were excited to do it,” Souza said. “I think it’s just fun — a chance to do something fun for the citizens.”
The city filmed a promotional video for the drop, mimicking the famous scene from the TV show “WKRP in Cincinnati” that featured a Thanksgiving turkey drop.
