WKU’s Cox, Hudson, Bauer garner top CUSA honors

Western Kentucky’s volleyball team earned 10 different accolades on Wednesday as Conference USA announced its All-CUSA teams, All-Freshman Team and superlative awards.
WKU’s Kaylee Cox becomes the seventh player in program history to earn the Alyssa Cavanaugh Player of the Year award, while Callie Bauer earned Setter of the Year honors. Head coach Travis Hudson also earned Coach of the Year recognition for the seventh time in his career.
Kenadee Coyle and Izzy Van De Wiele both earned First Team All-CUSA recognition for the first time in their careers while Cox and Bauer received their second First Team honors.
Both Alivia Skidmore and Faith Young earned spots on the All-Freshman squad while Skidmore also earned Second Team All-CUSA.
Cox earned her first Alyssa Cavanaugh Player of the Year award while her recognition is the fourth-straight CUSA Player of the Year award for the Hilltoppers while her First Team All-Conference is her second. In the 31 matches she’s played, she’s collected a total of 408 kills and has registered a .315 hitting percentage alongside a 3.68 K/S. Over the season she’s also posted a .924 serve reception rate and has dished out 32 service aces. Named the 2024 CUSA Preseason Player of the Year, Cox also earned CUSA Offensive Player of the Week five different times after a season with 13 double-doubles and 23 double-digit kill totals.
Bauer’s first Setter of the Year honors comes spending a majority of the season ranked in the top five nationally in assists. The Michigan native has also helped WKU to a seventh-best hitting percentage in the nation at .303. Leading both the conference and WKU with 1,201 assists, she’s also ranked 15th in the country in assists per set with 10.82. Throughout the season she’s also collected nine double-doubles and one triple-double against MTSU on Oct. 9. She posted a season-high 55 assists against UTEP on Oct. 26 and has also collected 51 total blocks this season. Named CUSA Setter of the Week on four different occasions, her First Team All-Conference award is the second of her career.
Hudson’s Coach of the Year marks his seventh in the 11 seasons since WKU joined CUSA. In addition, the regular-season championship won earlier this season is the sixth straight for the program and the 10th total. comes after a season that saw WKU extend its regular season conference win streak to 92 matches. The Hilltoppers have not lost a CUSA match since Oct. 19, 2018. In addition, Hudson has led his squad to a 21-match win streak and a perfect 18-0 performance in conference play.
Van De Wiele’s first First Team All-Conference accolade comes after a season that saw her consistently in the top five in the country in total blocks. She’s currently ranked third in the country and leads the conference in blocks with 159. Her 1.43 blocks per set also has her 15th in the country and again leading the conference. The Iowa native secured double-digit blocks twice during the season and she’s collected a total of 248 kills while her .313 hitting percentage has her ranked eighth in the conference.
Van De Wiele also earned herself a CUSA Defensive Player of the Week nod.
Coyle rounds out the Hilltoppers on the CUSA’s First Team All-Conference after a senior campaign that has compiled 248 kills, 64 digs and 97 blocks. After appearing in all 31 matches played this season, she’s totaled 111 sets played and registered a .357 hitting percentage, good enough for third in the conference and even better as a right side hitter. She posted a season high eight blocks against FIU on Oct. 12 and a season high 17 kills on Nov. 15 against Liberty and a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage against MTSU on Oct. 8
Skidmore, WKU’s lone member on the Second Team All-Conference, has put together a freshman campaign that has also earned her a spot on the All-Freshman team. Skidmore has appeared in all 31 matches played and has accumulated a total of 107 sets played. Through those 31 matches she’s picked up 295 kills with a .256 hitting clip and has collected a total of 32 blocks for 0.30 blocks per set. Her kill total is good enough for second best on the WKU roster while her 2.76 kills per set is also ranked second. Skidmore also earned CUSA Freshman of the Week three different times.
Finishing out the CUSA accolades for the Hilltoppers is Young, who appeared in all 31 matches, 23 of which she started in. In her 100 sets of play she collected 165 kills and posted a .307 hitting percentage. On the other side of the net, Young has amassed a total of 40 blocks and 21 digs. Having put together a 1.65 K/S, Young had a career-high 11 kills against Kennesaw State on Oct. 4.
