Take nothing for granted and make your voice heard

People’s voting patterns have altered in recent years with many citizens opting to vote early.

But the majority of registered voters have not yet cast their ballots ahead of Tuesday’s general election.

If you are among those in that latter category, we urge you to make sure your voice is heard and cast your vote.

Aside from the obvious primary focus of many – the presidential election – there are myriad local races and issues to be decided that will impact you and your community.

Depending on where you live in the state, you may be choosing a mayor, city council and school board members, state legislators and more.

Additionally, all voters in Kentucky will weigh in on two proposed constitutional amendments. Amendment 2, of course, has gained widespread coverage for its language that would allow public support for nonpublic schools.

Both sides have been quite verbal in professing their take on the controversial measure.

Whatever your view on that issue or on the numerous other races on the ballot, it is crucial that people exercise their right to vote.

A common fallacy is that a single vote will not matter – in some recent cases, we have had even statewide races decided by just a few hundred ballots.

Additionally, exercising a right like voting is akin to exercising your body – if neglected, the right can atrophy like an unused muscle.

Casting a ballot also helps legislators and the broader community know where people stand on an issue or candidate – even in a losing effort.

That’s why we urge all southcentral Kentuckians to take a few minutes and vote this Tuesday.
