NavLife Center a positive step forward

The issues related to homeless individuals have been felt in communities across the country, large and small.

Unfortunately, there is no easy or singular solution to the problem, as unhoused individuals have unique issues and backgrounds, from economic poverty to addiction and mental health issues.

Many programs have been tried nationally, with only limited positive results, as evidenced by the fact that the issue remains at the forefront.

But the difficulty of the problem doesn’t mean communities should avoid working on solutions, or at least efforts that can make some positive impact.

That is why we were glad to see a ceremony marking the imminent opening of the NavLife Center Thursday in Bowling Green.

The new center, owned by the Salvation Army and across from its main building, is expected to formally open to constituents this coming week.

The NavLife Center provides offices for multiple nonprofits dealing with the homeless in one spot: Room in the Inn, Goodwill, Hotel INC, Lifeskills and the Salvation Army.

One can think of it as a one-stop hub for homelessness services from those agencies.

The center also has bathrooms, two showers and three sets of enormous washing machines and dryers. It doesn’t have shelter spaces, but the Salvation Army is across the street, so there are some spaces next door for people who meet Salvation Army’s requirements for shelter.

To help address the homeless issue, about $2 million went into the center, while $2 million is going to Bowling Green’s Neighborhood and Community Services for affordable housing partnerships.

While, as previously stated, there is not one solution to the homeless issue, we are glad to see our community taking proactive and concrete steps.

The center, along with the continued efforts of the many nonprofit organizations in our community, is a positive step forward.
