Reject Amendment 2

Amendment 2 promoting tax dollars going to fund private schools is so vague it would no doubt invite much abuse. Voters should know what they are voting for, yet this Amendment, as written, does not outline any implementation or oversight plans.

Simply put, it is welfare for the well-off. There is strong evidence from a study of voucher and charter schools in Missouri that demonstrates there is no consistent improvement in academic achievement with some better and some worse than public schools. The same holds true for private schools.

Moreover, there is considerable evidence demonstrating that where school choice is implemented, it leads to more segregation (racial, religious and other tribes) in Missouri. In case you haven’t noticed, the last thing we need right now is a more divided citizenry.

Amendment 2 would also allow mixing of religion and state which is against the U.S. Constitution. Many of our forefathers came to this country to escape religious persecution. And although our country was founded on Judeo-Christian principles, the Framers never intended for churches to be involved in government to avoid the chance that religious persecution would develop. Many of the current private schools have church affiliations that promote a specific religious ideology. Do we really want our tax dollars promoting religious preferences?

Public schools provide a focal point for communities in which we get to know each other better. Hate and fear of “others” are taught and often based on unfounded notions.

Excellent public schools already exist. Let’s study what works and incorporate those principles to improve student achievement and success. Our public education system has many dedicated and exceptionally talented teachers. Let’s give “public” schools the support and resources they need to challenge their students to achieve their full potential. More importantly, educated citizenry is critical for maintaining democracy.

Vote NO on Amendment 2.
