Hopkins spins six scoreless innings in Hot Rods’ 1-0 loss

Brody Hopkins shined on the mound, hurling six scoreless innings while striking out seven batters but the Bowling Green Hot Rods’ bats went quiet, dropping the penultimate game of the series with a 1-0 loss to the Greensboro Grasshoppers on Saturday at First National Bank Field in Greensboro, North Carolina.

After six scoreless innings from both pitching staffs, the Grasshoppers (74-55 overall, 35-29 second half) scored the first run of the game against Hot Rods reliever Adam Boucher in the bottom of the seventh. Omar Alfonso launched a solo homer to right field, giving Greensboro a 1-0 lead.

The Hot Rods (75-53, 39-23) threatened in the top of the ninth inning, putting runners on the corners but failed to score, leading to a 1-0 loss to Greensboro.

Magdiel Cotto (2-1) picked up the win with 1 1/3 innings of relief work, allowing one hit while striking out one. Boucher (2-2) was given the loss, recording one out and surrendering one run on two hits. Greensboro’s Landon Tomkins earned the save, hurling two scoreless innings and giving up one hit and striking out one.

The Hot Rods and Grasshoppers play the finale of a six-game series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. CT first pitch at First National Bank Field. Bowling Green will send out right-hander Dylan Lesko against Greensboro righty J.P. Massey.
